Abstract

Hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure with systolic above 140 mmHg and diastolic above 90 mmHg. Hypertension is also called the silent killer. The causes of hypertension are unhealthy lifestyles such as consuming foods high in fat and high in salt, obesity, smoking, alcohol and stress. Hypertension can cause dangerous effects, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, kidney and vision problems. One therapy that can be given to hypertensive patients is the application of the brisk walking exercise technique. This study aims to describe nursing care using the brisk walking exercise technique in reducing blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension. Descriptive research with a case study design using interview and observation methods before and after therapy is given. The research results showed that the application of the brisk walking exercise technique was effective in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive elderly people. This can be seen from the decrease in blood pressure in subject I and subject II. In subject l before being given therapy the blood pressure was 150/90 mmHg while after being given therapy the blood pressure was 125/80 mmHg. And in subject II, the blood pressure was 160/90 mmHg before being given therapy, while after being given therapy the blood pressure was 130/80 mmHg. It is hoped that the application of the brisk walking exercise technique can be a non-pharmacological therapy that can be applied to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive elderly people.
