Abstract

Elderly is a person whose age has reached >60 years and will experience a decline in the function of the body's organs. Hypertension is a condition where blood pressure increases with a blood pressure value of > 140/90 mmHg. Hypertension can be treated with non-pharmacological therapy, namely with the application of melon juice. Melon contains high potassium which can lower blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to describe nursing care with the application of melon juice in lowering blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. This research uses descriptive research with a case study approach. The research subjects were two elderly people with criteria of cooperative and willing subjects, age range >60-75 years, female, suffering from grade 2 primary hypertension, had never been given melon juice, were not under pharmacological effects, and had no contraindications to melon juice. The results of this study obtained that subject I experienced a decrease in blood pressure from 160/100 mmHg to 140/70 mmHg and subject II from 160/90 mmHg to 130/90 mmHg. Thus it can be concluded that the application of melon juice is effective in reducing blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. It is hoped that the application of melon juice can be used as non-pharmacological therapy in lowering blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
